What is LEED? Answer
LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental
Design, is an internationally-recognized green building certification
system. The first public version of LEED was released by the
U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) in March 2000. LEED provides
building owners and operators with a framework for identifying
and implementing measurable solutions for building design, construction,
operations and maintenance. LEED certification provides independent,
third-party verification that a building was designed and built
using strategies aimed at achieving high performance in five
key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site
development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection
and indoor environmental quality.
LEED-certified buildings are designed to:
- Lower operating costs
- Conserve energy and water
- Increase the value of the building
- Reduce waste sent to landfills
- Create a healthy environment for occupants
- Reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions
- Qualify for tax rebates

What is the GBCI? Answer
The Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI)
is a third-party organization that provides independent oversight
of professional credentialing and LEED certification for all projects
registered under any LEED rating system. GBCI develops and administers
the LEED Professional Credential exams, which include the LEED Green
Associate and LEED AP with specialty credentials. GBCI also oversees
the Credential Maintenance Program (CMP) for LEED Professionals.
This continuing education requirement keeps LEED professionals at
the forefront of the rapidly evolving green building industry.
