This course discusses the benefits of a thoughtfully- designed light control system and how to make it work for your project's natural-lighting and shading needs. The discussion emphases implementing design methods including specification of technologies such as sun shade and canopy systems that creates useful and aesthetically-pleasing daylight systems. Designing to not only minimize solar heat gain and sunlight, but to successfully repurpose it for great environmental and aesthetic function. LEED credits associated with specifying sun shade and daylighting canopy systems are also discussed.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Discuss the role of sun shade devices in passive design and identify how canopies and awnings can contribute to a holistic sustainable building envelope.
  2. Identify which LEED credits sun shades and architectural canopies might contribute toward.
  3. Define daylighting and discuss its role in positive building design, while identifying the benefits of properly controlled natural light.
  4. List design considerations for glass and polycarbonate canopy systems.
