Health Product Declarations

Health Product Declarations (HPDs) are becoming a mandatory specification document by many firms. The Health Product Declaration (HPD) provides a standardized way of reporting the ingredients of building products, and the health effects associated with these materials. The Health Product Declaration Collaborative created the HPD, an open standard format for the accurate reporting of material contents and potential health hazards.

Major firms in the country have already begun requesting HPDs from manufacturers. Architecture firms such as Perkins+Will, Smith Group JJR, Gensler, and HKS are encouraging building product manufacturers to provide HPDs in order to be considered for product specification. Building product manufacturers who provide HPDs will be given preference over manufacturers that don't comply with these requests. GreenCE helps building product manufacturers develop HPDs to meet these demands for LEED certified projects.

The “mindful MATERIALS” database was established by HKS Architects to meet the growing need to provide chemical content and environmental impact information to project teams in a simple way. It was initially envisioned in 2014 as a supplemental label for use on product binders, and has since evolved into an online database that includes over 130,000 products. The database can be searched by CSI number, LEED v3 and v4 credits, price, availability, and more. To register a product, the manufacturer must register with the database, compile relevant sustainability information, and can then add any number of products, with links to their website and any sustainability literature such as a published Health Product Declaration (HPD). GreenCE can provide manufacturers with the necessary LEED assessment and HPD to get your products listed in the mindful MATERIALS database so that they can be discovered by participating specifiers.
