LEED v5 Carbon and Building Materials

LEED v5 Carbon and Building Materials

Construction and demolition generate more waste by weight than every household and business in the country combined. LEED v5 responds with four requirements covering reuse, product selection, waste diversion, and recycling infrastructure—and carbon connects them all. This course explains how to satisfy each requirement, from zero-waste planning and material reuse to multi-attribute product selection and construction waste diversion. It shows how material choices affect both waste and embodied carbon, what documentation each compliance path requires, and where projects most often fall short.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Describe the intent of the LEED v5 BD+C Planning for Zero Waste Operations prerequisite and the three associated building materials credits and explain how each reduces the embodied carbon of manufacturing replacement material.
  2. Identify the requirements of the LEED v5 BD+C Building and Materials Reuse credit, including both achievement options, the reuse thresholds, and the calculation methods, and explain why retained material carries no further embodied carbon.
  3. Explain the requirements of the LEED v5 BD+C Building Product Selection and Procurement credit, including the five criteria areas, the three achievement levels, and the multi-attribute score calculation.
  4. Apply the requirements of the LEED v5 BD+C Construction and Demolition Waste Diversion credit, including the materials management plan, the final waste report, and the diversion thresholds, to lower the carbon cost of replacing landfilled material.
