Safe, Resilient and Low-Maintenance Balconies for Multifamily Living

Safe, Resilient and Low-Maintenance Balconies for Multifamily Living

to take this course

This course explores how prefabricated, extruded aluminum balcony and railing systems enhance building durability, safety, sustainability, and aesthetic quality while offering architects a complete, coordinated exterior solutions package. By the end of this course, you will learn: How aluminum’s corrosion resistance, long service life, recyclable alloys, and durable powdercoat finishes support resilient, low-maintenance design with modern visual appeal, providing long-term advantages over legacy material choices like treated lumber, steel railings and concrete platforms.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Evaluate the advantages and limitations of common materials used in exterior structures, including wood, steel, concrete, and aluminum, by comparing durability, corrosion resistance, maintenance demands, climate performance, and recyclability to support safer, long-lasting balcony, deck, railing, and shade system design.
  2. Analyze how coordination of division 5 metals with aluminum balconies, decks, railings, pergolas, canopies and sunshades, enhance architectural cohesion, streamline detailing, and support waterproofing continuity, customization, and visual continuity across the building’s exterior envelope.
  3. Identify how aluminum exterior systems contribute to sustainable design goals through recyclability, reduced installation waste, long service life, low-maintenance finishes, clean worksites and support for LEED pathways such as EPDs, HPDs, and material ingredient credits.
  4. Apply engineering and construction strategies for improving occupant safety and building performance, including understanding load paths, structural mounting systems, prefabrication benefits, installation sequencing, and the impact these factors have on jobsite safety and long-term structural reliability.
  5. Examine the building codes, engineering requirements, and structural testing standards that govern exterior balcony and railing systems, including AC273, ASTM E985, and ASTM E935, and evaluate how prefabrication, proper installation sequencing, and aluminum system design contribute to improved jobsite safety, code compliance, and long-term structural reliability.
